THE REAL DEAL ON AD SUBMITTERS

by Rok Hrastnik

BASIC ONLINE ADVERTISING
The most basic way for us to advertise on the Internet is by submitting ads to various online advertising mediums: free-for-all or FFA sites, classifieds sites, forums, announcement lists, mailing lists, and search engines to name a few. Ad submitters do this for us by automatically placing our ad on multiple mediums at the same time.

AD SUBMITTER TYPES
There are different types of ad submitters. Some place your ad only on FFAs while others submit your ad to classifieds and other mediums at the same time. Some even claim to submit your site to search engines (not exactly an ad, but we still count these under the large ad submitters category). Very few submitters submit ads to mailing lists and many classifieds.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
You can get access to many ad submitters for free, while others cost money. The sad thing about ad submitters is that you actually get what you pay for: The free ones do submit your ad everywhere they claim to, but these are usually the places where people are less likely to see your ad in the huge crowd of others. So to truly have great success with this tool, you would do best to find one of the better paid ad submitters. Relying on ad submitters to get you a ranking with search engines is not very reliable. It is still best to do this by hand and obeying the rules of each search engine.

THE CLASSIFIEDS
Among the mediums that ad submitters effectively place ads to, the most successful ones are probably the classifieds sites, mailing lists and special non-advertising forums where you can't advertise everywhere and in any way you like. However, very few ad submitters submit to these with satisfaction. Don't worry though. You can still get decent coverage with the free versions.

SEMI-SUCCESS IN FREE ADVERTISING
Most ad submitters -- except those that place ads to many classifieds sites and mailing lists -- won't bring in that much traffic, but they don't take much time to use and it's still a good idea to use them with other techniques. It's a semi-successful way of advertising for free.

FFAs AND A DUMP EMAIL
When using a submitter that places your ads to FFA sites, enter a dump e-mail account into the field where the submitter asks for it. FFA sites bring in alot of unwanted email from the owners of these sites and it's sometimes difficult to unsubscribe from the advertising lists. The best way to go around this is to get a free email account from Hotmail (http://www.hotmail.com"http://www.hotmail.comhttp://www.hotmail.com) or other free web-based email services. You will use this email account for this purpose only. Do not submit to FFA sites using your main email address, unless you want to see hundreds of new commercial emails in your mailbox the next day.

STANDING OUT
FFA sites are often very crowded with similiar ads so it's fairly difficult to stand out in the crowd. Use a very catchy headline, but do not over do it. Most headlines look something like this: "Earn 5000+ USD in a month doing NOTHING, NOW!" Try to find an alternative approach that will sound truthful and still catch the reader's attention.

WHEN ON CLASSIFIEDS SITES...
Use your real email address when placing ads to classified sites. This is the email that is actually posted on these sites in the contact information box so that people will know how to contact you.

CATEGORY PLACEMENT
Always place your ads in the correct categories in the ad submitter if you are asked for it. Failing to do so might result in people accusing you of spam. No one wants to read ads about marketing in the computers category, for an example.

HEADLINES THAT GRAB
Many people are placing ads with ad submitters, and it is unbelievable how many of these people use almost the same headlines to grab attention. Headlines are most important with these mediums since there are many ads to see and most people only choose one or two to read that grab their attention. Try to differentiate yourself from the crowd with the headline and grab the attention of the visitors. Go to some FFAs to see what other people are using as headlines and see if you can come up with something very different.

MORE AD SUBMITTER TIPS
* When submitting your URL for search engines placement, modify your site for that with metatags and other things neccessary to get search engine coverage. But I still think that using these tools to get to search engines is mostly unsuccessful, so do this by hand also.

* Try to place your ad with as many submitters at the same time as possible.

* Track the responses to each of the headlines you use with the ad submitters. This can help you greatly in finding the best type of headline to use with this tool. You can do this by advertising various email addresses for people to send an email to requesting more information. You can track responses to each headline with different email subjects you specify with the email address.

For example:
Headline 1: mailto:rok.hrastnik@siol.net?subject=More_Info_1
Headline 2: mailto:rok.hrastnik@siol.net?subject=More_Info_2

Just remember to try out all different headline in exactly the same circumstances (same submitters, same time, even the same day if you can). Allow one week for each ad to show you if it's effective or not.

* Another way to use online ad submitters is to find a submitter you can use on your site. If you can find some like that, put them on your site as a special bonus for your visitors. It just might bring in more traffic. Offerring big lists of the submitters can also work well for you.
